Animate with dynamics a snow globe

Lear how to animate a snow globe in After Effects usgin Newton, ConnectLayersPRO, Pastiche and DUiK!

Matthew contacted us asking this:

“Hi there, I have a job coming up where I need to animate a snow globe that shakes. I’m thinking it would be cool to have actual snow moving around inside the glass and I’m thinking Newton would be a great solution for this.”

And here’s our answer…

A 5 parts tutorial covering a wide range of use of our tools including Newton, Pastiche, ConnectLayersPRO and DUiK.

We'll be using several powerful tools, including Newton, ConnectLayersPRO, Pastiche, and DUiK, to bring your snow globe to life. Follow these steps to create a captivating and realistic animation:

Part 1: Animating the Christmas Tree

Start by creating your Christmas tree in After Effects and precompose it. Import your animated objects into Newton and set up the simulation. Use the Randomizer to place objects randomly and adjust the Sub-Steps for better precision. Create a chain of elements that will allow them all to move on axes and fine-tune the animation with damping and tension settings.

Part 2: Adding Bubbles

Add bubbles to your tree using Newton. Attach the bubbles to the tree and adjust their collision settings to ensure they move realistically. Use the Randomizer to place the bubbles randomly and fine-tune the animation with damping settings.

Part 3: Creating Garland with ConnectLayersPRO

Use ConnectLayersPRO to create garland for your tree. Trace the lines between the objects and add curves to create dynamic movement. Use the Dynamic Verlet setting to control the stiffness and gravity of the garland. Bake the animation to ensure consistent movement.

Part 4: Animating the Presents

Animate the presents inside the snow globe using Newton. Create a vectorized version of the globe's interior to define the boundaries. Use the Puppet tool in After Effects to create points that will reattach to the presents, allowing them to move independently. Adjust the damping and tension settings to control the movement of the presents.

Part 5: Adding Snowflakes with Pastiche

Use Pastiche to position the snowflakes inside the snow globe. Create a collage of snowflakes and adjust the scaling to achieve the desired effect. Use Newton to simulate the movement of the snowflakes, adding damping and magnetism settings to control their behavior. Create multiple layers of snowflakes to add depth and richness to your animation.

Conclusion

That's it! You've successfully created a dynamic snow globe animation using After Effects, Newton, ConnectLayersPRO, Pastiche, and DUiK. Experiment with different settings and effects to create unique and captivating animations. Stay tuned for more tutorials and updates.
